Criminals Are Using Your Facebook Posts to Target You for Theft

Beware of what you post on Facebook. Criminals could be using that information to target you for theft! Think about it. How many of your Facebook friends talk about their new flat screen TV or post pictures of the Jamaican vacation they’re on? A new report says criminals are using this information to find their next targets. Michael Fraser is a former burglar who helped put the report together. He says it works like this: The bad guys will send out hundreds of friend requests on Facebook and Twitter, and see who bites, which is a lot of people. 13% of people on Facebook and 92% of people on Twitter will accept a request, no questions asked. Once they have access to your personal profile, Fraser says they’ll follow you closely and wait for you to post something about a new gadget you bought or an upcoming vacation. Then they make their move.
Some Facebookers make it really easy for crooks. They post party pictures that clearly show the interior of their homes. Fraser says this gives criminals a leg-up when they’re breaking in. Almost 10% of men actually post their HOME ADDRESS on their profile! Women are a little smarter, only 4% of women post addresses. Think about this: There are just over 15-million women on Facebook in North America. That means over 600,000 women are posting their personal home addresses for anyone to find!
So, who’s the worst offender when it comes to posting personal details online? Teens and young adults. According to the study almost two thirds of people between the ages of 16 and 24 are posting where they’ll be and when, on their Facebook page. This same age group is also more likely to accept a friend request from a total stranger. Not a good combo. So don’t let yourself become a target. Don’t ever accept a stranger’s friend request and keep private information private. If you want to catch friends and family up on a vacation you’re taking or a new entertainment system you just bought, send out an email from your personal account. That way you’ll know exactly who has access to the information.

Healthy Breakfast on Standardized Test Day

With school back in session, allow me to vent about one of my pet peeves.

That letter that is sent home right before standardized test season begins - Telling me, as a parent, how important these next few days are and how I should make sure my child gets a good night of sleep and a good breakfast.

What - I shouldn't be doing that every day? Aren't the days of learning just as, if not more, important to be in the best condition for school.

Now, I know morning could be rushed and stressful - so you need a plan. Every morning should include a good protein filled - complex carb breakfast for every member of the family. - ( sugar coated cereal - AKA candy - is not a good breakfast -despite what the manufacturers would have you believe). This will hold off blood sugar falls until you can refuel at lunch.

Some suggestions:
  • Peanut butter on whole grain toast or whole grain crackers
  • Apple slices with peanut butter
  • Rolled oats oatmeal with added protein powder
  • Smoothie with fruit & protein powder added

There are some other ideas included in the Free E-Book available on this site.

Did You Know?

• Children eat nearly twice as many calories(770) at restaurants as they do during a meal at home (420).

• According to a national study, 92% of elementary schools do not provide daily physical education classes for all students throughout the entire school year.

• The typical American child spends about 44.5 hours per week using media outside of school.

• At least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week is the recommended minimum. However, nearly 23 percent of children and nearly 40 percent of adults get no free-time physical activity at all.

• Studies have shown that, between 1977 and 1996, portion sizes and corresponding calories per serving grew markedly in the United States.

One study of portion sizes for typical items showed that:

• Salty snacks increased from 132 calories to 225 calories.
• Soft drinks increased from 144 calories to 193 calories.
• French fries increased from 188 calories to 256 calories.
• Hamburgers increased from 389 calories to 486 calories.

Vitamin Water vs. Real Water

Vitamin waters have been all the rage the past couple of years, but if it’s vitamins that you’re looking for, you might look elsewhere. Many of the vitamins they proclaim to include are in minute quantities and are water soluble, so they would not sustain & be bio-available to you in this drink.

An average bottle of vitamin water is packed with over 100 calories, and loaded with serious amounts of sugar for flavoring. It’s almost as bad as drinking soda,(without the carbonation) and surely won’t help you or your children on your fitness journey.

You and your family should drink regular water which has zero calories. My family loves the Bestwater Perfect Pitcher pictured above. Click here for more information.

Concerned about you vitamin intake - choose the right vitamin for you, your teen, or your child and get the nutritional boost your are looking for. I'd be happy to recommend what has worked for our family.

Top 20 Antioxidant-Rich Foods

Trying to add more disease-fighting antioxidants into your diet? The following 20 foods contain the highest antioxidant concentration.

Pomegranates
Small red beans (dried)
Wild blueberries
Red kidney beans
Pinto beans
Blueberries (cultivated)
Cranberries
Artichokes (cooked)
Blackberries
Prunes
Raspberries
Strawberries
Red Delicious apples
Granny Smith apples
Pecans
Sweet cherries
Black plums
Gala apples
Black beans (dried)
Plums
Antioxidants are naturally occurring nutrients that help prevent heart disease, cancer, and the effects of aging. Little is actually known about how antioxidants work or what makes them function best. Scientists believe that some antioxidants are more potent than others, and their potency can be affected by cooking or digestion. For example, the antioxidants in blueberries lose their potency when cooked, while the antioxidants in tomatoes become more potent when cooked.

So use this list to find antioxidant-rich foods, but for the best nutritional outcome, eat them in a wide variety. (Note that all the foods listed above are acceptable on the South Beach Diet; fruits would be introduced starting in Phase 2.)

Hiking Anyone?

One of our favorite things to do with our children when they were young was to pack a lunch, tailgate, and go for a hike. It was an inexpensive way to spend a fun day together. Even though my children are older now we still like to hike when we are together. Lately, it has been my husband and I doing the hiking and picnicing.

Recently we hiked with friends and it brought back memories of when my children were little. Our son always had a lot of energy to burn and would run ahead. We used to give him a land mark that he could go ahead to -where we could still see him. He would run ahead to the designated spot, turn around and run back to us, then forward again. It seemed he always traveled 2 to 3 times as far as we did with all his back and forth.

While hiking this weekend I heard a young family use a different tactic with their energetic one. The mom would call out traffic light signals. Red light - stop where you are. Yellow light - slow up. Green light -hike. The child didn't feel they were stifled - it was all a game.

What clever ideas have you used with your children?
